The Nurse Aide/Assistant training and certification process was established in 1990 by the Federal Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (OBRA).  The mission of OBRA was the improvement of the quality of patient care by ensuring that all nurse aides and nurse assistants employed in the healthcare industry have minimum competencies to assist licensed LPN’s and RN’s in administering patient care.  Georgia has adopted extensive guidelines for the training of nurse aides/assistants, and their certification in meeting these guidelines.  This includes a State-maintained registry of all Georgia Certified Nursing Aides/Assistants (CNA’s).

 

Certified Nursing Aide/Assistants (CNA’s) are certified by the State of Georgia through a private contractor, the Georgia Medical Care Foundation (GMCF).  The GMCF is responsible for the management process of all State-approved Nurse Aide/Assistant Training Programs (NATP), the administering of certification testing, and the maintenance of the Nurse Aide/Assistant Registry (NAR).

 

The Nurse Aide/Assistant Training Programs (NATP) are located throughout the State of Georgia.  For the certification process, these training programs must be approved by the Georgia Medical Care Foundation (GMCF).  You can link to a list of the Approved Programs before enrolling to verify that your training program has been approved.  All students enrolling in a Nurse Aide/Assistant Training Program must complete classroom, lab, and clinical rotations during the training.  A 100% rating in the lab rotation is required before the clinical rotation can begin.  During the clinical rotation, all students must be supervised by a licensed LPN or RN.  Certification Testing is administered at locations throughout the State of Georgia.  Once a CNA is certified and registered on the Nurse Aide/Assistant Registry, this certification must remain active to assure eligibility to work in a licensed healthcare facility.

 

Once certified, all CNA’s must renew their certification every two (2) years or twenty-four (24) months using the appropriate Re-Certification Form.  For re-certification, Federal Regulations require that the CNA must have worked as a CNA for pay, a minimum of eight (8) hours within the last twenty-four (24) consecutive months under the supervision of a Registered Nurse.  Candidates for re-certification that do not meet this requirement must be retested to remain on the Georgia Registry.  If the certification expires three (3) or more years from the date of the last re-certification, then the candidate must complete another State-approved nurse aide/assistant training program, followed by the successful completion of the certification test.
